Positron annihilation spectrum from the Galactic Center region observed by SPI/INTEGRAL

چکیده
The electron-positron annihilation spectrum observed by SPI/INTEGRAL during deep Galactic Center region exposure is reported. The line energy (510.954±0.075 keV) is consistent with the unshifted annihilation line. The width of the annihilation line is 2.37±0.25 keV (FWHM), while the strength of the ortho-positronium continuum suggests that the dominant fraction of positrons (94±6%) form positronium before annihilation. Compared to the previous missions these deep INTEGRAL observations provide the most stringent constraints on the line energy and width. Under assumption of an annihilation in a single-phase medium these spectral parameters can be explained by a warm Te ∼ 7000 − 4 10 4 K gas with the degree of ionization larger than few 10. One of the wide-spread ISM phases warm (Te ∼ 8000 K) and weakly ionized (degree of ionization ∼ 0.1) medium does satisfy these criteria. Other single-phase solutions are also formally allowed by the data (e.g. cold, but substantially ionized ISM), but such solutions are believed to be astrophysically unimportant. The observed spectrum can also be explained by the annihilation in a multi-phase ISM. Fraction of positrons annihilating in a very hot (Te ≥ 10 6 K) phase is constrained to be less than ∼8%. Neither moderately hot (Te ≥ 10 5 K) ionized medium nor very cold (Te ≤ 10 3 K) neutral medium can make a dominant contribution to the observed annihilation spectrum. However a combination of a cold/neutral, warm/neutral and warm/ionized phases in comparable proportions could also be consistent with the data.

keV line from millisecond pulsars in the Galactic center
Observations of a strong and extended positron-electron annihilation line emission in the Galactic center (GC) region by the SPI/INTEGRAL are challenging to the existing models of positron sources in the Galaxy. In this paper, we study the possibility that pulsar winds from a millisecond pulsar population in the GC produce the 511 keV line. Our preliminary estimations predict that the e annihil...

The imaging spectrometer SPI on board ESA’s INTEGRAL observatory provides us with an unprecedented view of positron annihilation in our Galaxy. The first sky maps in the 511 keV annihilation line and in the positronium continuum from SPI showed a puzzling concentration of annihilation radiation in the Galactic bulge region. By now, more than twice as many INTEGRAL observations are available, of...

Recently INTEGRAL/SPI has observed a strong and extended emission resulting from electron-positron annihilation in the Galactic center region, consistent with the Galactic bulge geometry. The positron production rate, estimated to more than 10 per second, is very high and raises a challenging question about the nature of the Galactic positron source. Commonly considered astrophysical positron i...

The diffuse continuum emission from the Galactic plane in the energy range 18–1000 keV has been studied using 16 Ms of data from the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL. With such an exposure we can exploit the imaging properties of SPI to achieve a good separation of point sources from the various diffuse components. Using a candidate-source catalogue derived with IBIS on INTEGRAL and a number of sky d...

INTEGRAL/SPI has recently observed a strong and extended emission resulting from electron-positron annihilation located in the Galactic center region, consistent with the Galactic bulge geometry, without any counterpart at high gamma-ray energies, nor in the 1809 keV Al decay line. In order to explain the rate of positron injection in the Galactic bulge, estimated to more than 10 s, the most co...
